You might be wondering; how many spider man movies are there? Well, this will all depend on your definition of a spider man movie because the answer might surprise you! In fact, there are five different film versions of Spider-Man – which one is best?
Spoiler alert – it isn’t Spider-Man 3…you can read about it here! Of course, the most recent addition to the spider man movies list (at least in 2017) is Spiderman: Homecoming!
The Origins of Spider-Man
Spider-Man was a hero who found his purpose. He was bitten by a radioactive spider as an adolescent and discovered he had special abilities. Peter Parker struggled to balance school life, doing what was necessary for his aunt, who raised him, and fighting crime in the streets. He is known for using his spider sense to warn him of impending danger.
The first Spider-Man movie from 2002 began with the death of his Uncle Ben, which motivated Peter to try and fight crime more aggressively than in the comics. The sequel Spider-Man 2 featured Doctor Octopus trying to make a new atomic bomb.
Spider-Man 3 had Sandman trying to revenge on the world because he was trapped in sand after getting exposed to an experimental particle accelerator at Oscar Industries that gave him sand like properties.
Spider-Mans 4 through 6 were all reboots of previous films, each having its own villain: Venom (2008), Doc Rock (2012) and Electro (2014). These three entries also contained a subplot where they tried to turn Mary Jane Watson into one of their respective super villains.
Spider-Man 7 had Mysterious as the main villain and even though it was a reboot, it did not star Andrew Garfield but instead Tom Holland due to Marvel’s rights over Sony Pictures, although this film does not include either Aunt May or Gwen Stacy.
The Original Spider-Man Trilogy
The three original Spider-Man Trilogy is probably the most beloved of all spider man movie series, with Sam Raimi directing and Tobey Maguire playing the role. If you look on some lists, it’s said that Spider-Man Trilogy is one of the greatest film trilogies of all time. The following post looks at which Spider-man trilogy was voted as the favourite or what’s considered by many to be best.
Spider-Man I, II and III saw far more acclaim than any other instalment in franchise. However, the consensus seems to be that Spider-man 3 was disappointing as it wasn’t up to par with its predecessors. In addition, Spider-man 2 was also held in high regard among critics because of how emotionally charged and relatable it was compared to Spider-man 1.
For example, Spider-man 2 focused on Peter Parker’s difficult decision between science or his responsibility as a father (Spider-Man) while Spider-Man 1 mostly dealt with themes such as self-identity and responsibility to the community.
The only other spider man movies not included in this list are Spider Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse (2018), Spider Man: Far from Home (2019) and Spider Man: Into the Spider verse (2018).
The Amazing Spider-Man Series
After producing the five Spider-Man films with Marvel, Sony planned to reboot the series. The Amazing Spider-man was released in 2012 and was highly praised by critics, being referred as Spider-man’s best movie since Spider-Man 2 and the most polished superhero origin movie since Tim Burton’s Batman.
Director Marc Webb has expressed interest in returning for a second film; however, most of the plans were scrapped when actress Emma Stone announced she would not be appearing in any more Spider-man sequels. As a result, the character Gwen Stacy will now take on Peter Parker’s love interest from this point onwards.
Jamie Foxx has been cast to play Electro, Dane DeVaan is playing Harry Osborn/Green Goblin, Chris Cooper is going to play Norman Osborn (Harry’s father), and Paul Giamatti will be Rhino. There are also rumours that Felicia Hardy will return as Black Cat or have a new female villain that isn’t identified yet.
We can only hope they make another sequel or two! I’m guessing you don’t know how many total Spider-man movies there are either? Well, there’s thirteen total and it doesn’t look like that number will change anytime soon.
Spiderman Homecoming
So far, there have been three Spiderman films. The first one was in 2002. Spiderman started out as a very successful film. It grossed $400 million and received good reviews by critics. With an at home release on Blu Ray, DVD, and Digital HD the movie has grossed around $900 million.
The second instalment to the Spiderman series was released in 2007 (Spiderman 3). This movie got good reviews when it was released with critics for the most part praising its well written script and action sequences although some people disliked how over the top it felt at times but still found this entry to be a good ending to the trilogy.
The third movie is being made. There is no official name yet for the third movie, but we know that Tom Holland will be playing Spider-Man again after he made his debut appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feigen told us that Peter Parker would not be graduating high school during Homecoming which is something that we all assumed would happen given he’s only 15 years old so you can bet that Homecoming won’t end well for our friendly neighbourhood superhero!
Conclusion
Spider Man movies started in 1977 with the film Spider-Man, starring Nicholas Hammond as the titular hero. There were three more films released in the same decade before a little hiatus, which ended with three more films to span from the 90’s into 2000’s.
In 2002 Spider-Man’s first reboot was released, but it still had some original characters, which allowed for a coherent plot. It is currently unknown what will happen to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man character after 2007’s less than successful Spider-Man 3 and if the upcoming new release of 2012 will be rebooted or not. However, one thing that we do know is that these Spider Man movies have been around for over forty years!
