How to Write a Blog Post Outline (With a Free Template)
Staring at a blank page is the hardest part of writing. A blog post outline solves that. It turns research into a clear plan so writing becomes faster and your finished article is better organized.
Why Outline First?
- Faster writing: you always know what comes next.
- Better structure: logical flow and clear headings help readers and SEO.
- Complete coverage: you spot gaps before you write.
- Less editing: fewer rewrites of wandering drafts.
How to Create a Blog Post Outline
1. Define the goal
Write one sentence: “After reading, the reader will be able to…”. Everything in the outline should serve that goal.
2. Confirm the keyword and intent
Search your main keyword and note what type of content ranks. Read about search intent.
3. Collect subtopics
List the subtopics the top results cover, questions from People Also Ask and anything you know that others missed.
4. Organize into headings
Turn subtopics into H2s and H3s in a logical order: basics first, then steps, then tips, mistakes and FAQs.
5. Add bullet notes under each heading
Add key points, examples, data, images or screenshots you plan to include, and internal links to add.
